34. The Rainbow Army

When we returned to the mainland, we found Daerec and Shaina camped out next to Ezychy’s rolling house, patiently waiting for us. Although, judging from their smiles, I suspected they’d availed themselves of some other, more pleasant activities to keep them occupied during that time.

“I’m guessing, from the look on your faces, that you weren’t able to convince them huh?” said Daerec while chewing the stem of a lavender plant. “Who needs a bunch of perfumers anyway? We can do without them.”

I responded cheerfully: “Your life as a Janis has made you a natural pessimist.” I pointed at Papylia. “Take a look…”

The intricate net dome of white silk threads became a hive of activity. Thousands of chromes climbed all over it, turning into a vibrating, violet mass. Cestia and I quickly filled our friends in about our meeting with the Magnificent Monarch, leaving nothing out – including his heart-stopping little test. But true to his word, the monarch had given his subjects a call to action and the Violets were indeed joining our cause. Surely what happened next was an illusion, but for a moment the citizens of Papylia seemed to form a giant fist in the sky.

We made our way back to join the Orange and Yellow and the Red Janis. I introduced Danayd to Brother Ddeko and to Sister Sitria. That night, it felt as if a new chapter was being written into the Collective Laws – one that should have been penned a long time ago. The representatives of four nations sat together around a campfire, discussing the future of the territories, while their subjects got to know each other and make merry. A feeling of hope and gaiety, sweet as any perfume, infused the air.

“Once the war is over, we should have roundtable discussions like this every solstice,” said Ddeko. Everyone nodded in agreement.

“But the war is not over, yet,” Cestia reminded us. “I respect you greatly Ddeko, but you speak as if it has already been won. It hasn’t even been fought.”

Ddeko tossed another small log into the fire and then spoke again: “Oh I wouldn’t be so sure about that young princess… We must outnumber the Blacks by now. I would expect them to surrender without a fight.”

“Never,” I told him. “That isn’t the way of the Blacks. They will fight and fight hard.”

It was then Danayd’s turn to speak: “We know that, after Everdia, the Blacks went to Ayas and met with the Blue. Some Violets saw their army leave Ayas and march back in the direction of the Black territory.”

“Did they destroy Ayas as well?” asked Cestia.

“Not that we know of. There was no conflict.” Replied Danayd.

“Well at least one thing is sure then,” commented Sitria. “The Blues are allied with the Blacks. Why else would the Blacks not fight them like they did the others?

Shaina nodded and said: “My elder sister is right. We should head straight for Axyum and attack the Black. This way the Blue will not be able to help them.
